LIPEDEMA

Lipedema is “swelling of the fat,” a condition that mainly affects the lower extremities but can affect the upper extremities as well. Although it’s a disorder, it can be, and often is, misdiagnosed as obesity.

Lipedema can appear after puberty, during pregnancy, or following the start of hormonal therapy.

The disorder can show up in multiple women in the same family. Liposuction by one of our double board certified plastic surgeons can relieve discomfort and restore natural balance to the body structure. Our plastic surgeons are some of the only plastic surgeons in the United States with the knowledge and skill to treat lipedema and address the specific concerns it presents. Schedule a consultation today to see how lipedema treatment can improve your quality of life.

LIPEDEMA TREATMENT

Lipedema is a common condition occurring in about 11% of women, which causes painful and irregular accumulation of fat deposits mostly on the thighs, calves, ankles and arms. It is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. Hormonal and hereditary factors can cause lipedema. Customized liposuction by one of our double board-certified plastic surgeons can alter the course of the disease and significantly reduce the discomfort associated with it, including mobility issues, bruising, and persistent pain.

• We offer personalized services designed to effectively treat your specific needs.

• We use a lymphatic-sparing technique to preserve lymphatics, veins, arteries, and nerves.

• Procedures are performed in our fully accredited, in-house, AAAASF-certified surgical facility.

• Modified lymphatic drainage massage and compression stockings are provided to minimize swelling and maximize results.

• Our patient-centered approach inspires confidence and ensures an outcome of reduced pain, discomfort, and swelling.

Our Lipedema Plastic Surgeons and Patient Care Coordinators will work with you closely in the planning phase of your procedure. We will consider the severity of your lipedema, as well as your physical stature, overall look, and desired outcomes to create a personalized lipedema fat removal plan. You can reclaim your comfort, confidence, and overall well-being with the help of our world-renowned team.

DO YOU HAVE LIPEDEMA?

STEP 1: LEARN ABOUT LIPEDEMA SYMPTOMS

There are four progressive stages of lipedema. The most common symptom of Stage I lipedema is having disproportionately large, column-like, but symmetrical legs that are tender and bruise easily. It’s difficult to differentiate between this and normal weight gain. But if the fat spontaneously hurts, hurts with pressure, and does not pit when you press into it, then you are showing lipedema symptoms.

Stage II has the same symptoms as early stage lipedema, but you may now be forming fist-sized lumps of cellulite. You may also easily feel fatty nodes, and your skin may have become uneven, textured, and/or discolored.

By Stage III, your legs are no longer symmetrical and feature large lumps of fat. Your skin has become thick and hardened with discoloration, and lymphedema has also developed.

Stage IV is the most destructive phase of the disorder, and by now you may be suffering from the development of lipolymphedema. This is a condition in which both lipedema and lymphedema have taken over. Large overhangs of tissue have appeared on the extremities (arms & legs) and extreme discomfort has set in.

STEP 2: GET A DIAGNOSIS

Ultimately to get treatment, you need to have lipedema diagnosed by an expert. But if you’re looking for answers and want to go into your doctor’s appointment armed with knowledge, use this 4-step self-diagnosis:

  1. Find out if you have a family history of lipedema.
  2. Feel the fat in your legs and in other parts of your body, looking for textural differences and discomfort.
  3. Write down your symptoms, and note if they’ve changed over time.
  4. Compare your symptoms and timeline to the lipedema symptoms above.

STEP 3: TREAT IT

There’s only one real treatment for lipedema, and that’s a lipedema with lymph sparing liposuction procedure. It’s a rare, complex procedure that preserves the lymphatics, veins, arteries, and nerves, and it has to be performed by skilled specialist like Dr. Saba. Qualified lipedema specialists can be exceptionally rare and difficult to locate, which is why we are thrilled to offer it to prospective patients from around the world.

While liposuction is the only cure for this disease, you can manage some lipedema symptoms with lymphatic drainage massage and compression stockings.

If you think you have lipedema, schedule a consultation today. Together, you will discuss your diagnosis, and the best course of treatment for your specific case so you feel comfortable and confident about tackling the condition.
