Lipedema refers to a common condition occurring in about 11% of women, which causes irregular accumulation of fat deposits mostly on the legs, thighs, hips, arms and forearms. It spares the feet and hands. Causes of Lipedema include hormonal and hereditary factors.

Very few plastic surgeons are equipped with the knowledge, expertise, and experience to successfully treat lipedema with liposuction worldwide, so patients seeking a qualified provider often travel all the way to Europe to get the results they desire. We offer the exceptionally rare lipedema with lymph sparing liposuction–a special technique that preserves the lymphatics, veins, arteries, and nerves.

The uneven fat distribution caused by this condition can cause a number of complications for its sufferers. Heaviness and pain in the limbs can be among the most uncomfortable. A customized course of liposuction by Dr. Salameh can alter the course of the disease and significantly reduce the discomfort associated with it, including mobility issues, bruising, and persistent pain. A pain-free life is priceless, and our previous patients can attest to that. Additionally, we include modified lymphatic drainage massage to drain fluids, performed at the conclusion of the procedure. Lipedema FAQ Section

How is lipedema diagnosed?

It is a clinical diagnosis, based on genetic and hormonal factors. Generally, it runs in families and affects about 11% of the female population.

I also have varicose veins. Should I have them treated before or after liposuction?

If the veins are large, then you need to treat them beforehand. If they are smaller spider veins then no need to treat them ahead of time.

What packages do you offer for lipedema patients?

At Salameh Plastic Surgery, we tailor our services to fit the needs of our patients. All lipedema procedures come with modified MLD and compression garments. For those traveling alone, all packages include a 2 night hotel stay and an assigned caregiver can be added for an additional charge. Your Patient Care Coordinator will help you decide which package is best for you.

How much does lipedema treatment at Salameh Plastic Surgery cost?

Each patient has individual needs. To be able to provide the most excellent results and outstanding customized patient experience, costs will vary from patient to patient. However, our prices are competitive and include two pairs of compression and two sessions of modified MLD.

What type of anesthesia do you use?

We provide all types of anesthesia, from general to local. Our AAAASF certified surgical suite and nurse anesthetist allow us to create the most comfortable experience possible.

What technique do you use?

Dr. Salameh’s favorite technique is TAL, PAL, SAFE. This allows him to take out as much fat as possible without damaging the lymphatics, with minimum irregularities and no skin damage while also providing skin retraction.

Do you perform skin resection or skin tightening in your office?

Yes, we perform skin retightening, thigh lifts, arm lifts, and tummy tucks.

Is there an age limit for this procedure?

The patient must be above the age of 18.

Is lipedema treatment covered by insurance?

Depending on the carrier. Most insurances do not cover Lipedema but we will be happy to provide you with a personalized treatment plan, chart notes, and procedure notes for you to submit to insurance.

What lifestyle changes do you recommend after surgery?

We strongly recommend a low carb diet, minimal alcohol and salt intake, continuous modified MLD, and low impact exercises like water activity, yoga, etc.

Are there any other effective treatment options for lipedema besides liposuction?

Generally, the answer to this question is no. However, we do recommend modified MLD (lymphatic drainage massage) and compression.

Should liposuction be performed before pregnancy or should I wait?

If you are planning on getting pregnant in the next few months, you should wait. Otherwise, it’s best to remove as much as possible beforehand in case the disease flares post-pregnancy.

Does compression need to be worn after lipedema surgery for at least a year during the healing process?

The more compression you wear, the less swelling you will have and potentially less fibrosis and scarring you will have. It is not a requirement, but it can potentially improve your outcome.

Do you offer virtual consultations?

Yes we do, and at various times throughout the day to accommodate for different time zones.

What happens if I need more than one procedure?

When our patients require more than one procedure for proper removal, we typically schedule them 8 weeks apart to ensure proper healing.

How do I prepare for more than one procedure?

We recommend taking iron, folate, and B12 supplements between procedures. You should also ensure that you are properly hydrated, exercising regularly, and are maintaining a healthy diet.
