Microneedling: What To Expect - Salameh Plastic Surgery

Microneedling, also known as skin needling and collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, create a more even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of blemishes. These age-related problems afflict countless mature adults, but many of the simple remedies don’t produce satisfactory results.

What Are Channel Wounds?

Some people confuse microneedling with acupuncture. These are two entirely different procedures. Microneedling is performed to physically stimulate the body to replace old tissue with new growth. This is accomplished through the creation of a multitude of tiny shaft wounds in and through the skin layers.

These channel wounds are so tiny they can hardly be seen without a magnifying glass. Very small red dots may form on the skin surface after the skin is needled, but this visual sign disappears quite rapidly.

Performing the Procedure

After we consult with the client, we outline a treatment plan based on the current skin tone and texture, the skin thickness in the treatable areas, and the amount of wrinkling and scarring that’s causing the concern in the first place. A typical microneedling treatment schedule involves four or five sessions, each of which lasts about 45 minutes.

We wash the skin thoroughly, and we may apply a soothing gel to the skin surface. After we use the needling instruments, we wash the face again. We apply ice or a cold towel to minimize swelling. The client won’t feel pain during the procedure.

After a week or so, we repeat the procedure, and we repeat it again several more times over the course of a month or so. The needling therefore involves making channel wounds that in most cases are adjacent to areas already treated. This is important because the body will use new skin cell growth as a template. In other words, each subsequent treatment is even more effective than the one before.

Long-Term Satisfactory Results

After a month or so following the last treatment, visual improvement is noticeable. The skin shows fewer fine lines and wrinkles, and blemishes are less prominent. The production of collagen continues for some time after the treatment schedule is complete. The final result is skin that’s more taut and supple than it was before microneedling was performed.
